As special educators, we all work with paraprofessionals. It is important that our special education assistants understand the principles of positive behavior support and intervention. However, many paraprofessionals lack this essential training. The following online learning module was designed with this purpose in mind. This training was created for special education paraprofessionals by the Behavior Support Office of Los Angeles Unified School District. It addresses 9 components of Positive Behavior Support. Data collection documents are provided.

PBS for PARAPROFFESIONALS

Since conducting an FBA is a daunting task, review of the process is helpful if not essential. The following Power Point is a tutorial of the FBA process provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District Department of Special Education. This tutorial walks the viewer through each step from defining the target behavior to creating a behavior intervention plan.

FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT

Even in the best managed classroom, some children need additional behavior support beyond the universal Tier I supports such as rules, procedures, and routines. Behavior of Tier II students may require behavior contracts and daily charting. The following link provides multiple premade behavior charts for a variety of purposes.

BEHAVIOR CHARTS

NICHCY (National Disssemination Center for Children with Disabilities) has created an Behavior Suite to connect readers with sources of information for helping children who have behavior challenges. Because “behavior” is such a vast topic, they have divided the subject up into separate pages to make finding the information you need more accessible. The pages include: 1) Behavior Expertise, 2) Behavior Assessment, 3) Behavior at Home, 4) Behavior at School, and 5) Bullying.

Effective classroom managements linking to students with positive behavior supports (SWPBS).
In the link below gives an overview of how SWPBS principles might enhance effective classroom management practices. This is a great tool to use when learning about SWPBS. It touches on all the major components and includes ways to have an effective classroom. There are seven guided principles to follow in order to have and effective classroom.

These checklists I evasion to be useful tools because they are used to gather data on a behavior especially useful in my case because I rely on anecdotal history to determine if a student has a behavioral challenge.
A. Learning disabilities checklist because it is thorough and includes a section of behavior and b, with some modification I could use the token economy monitoring form to track improvement in student's behavior Kerr and Nelson,2012.

Student Assisted Functional Assessment Interview

The tool below is an assessment interview that can be used during the Functional Behavior Assessment process. It is important to include the student in the assessment process and one way to do so is through an interview. The 5 page document combines short answer questions and rating scales to get an idea of why the student may be displaying the problem behaviors.
